Chesapeake woman carjacks van with five children inside after multi-vehicle crash in North Carolina

GRANDY, N.C. (WAVY) — A Chesapeake lady is going through a number of expenses soon after she allegedly still left the scene of a crash in a stolen automobile with 5 kids inside.

Police say they gained a get in touch with at 12:40 p.m. on Sunday afternoon concerning a multi-car or truck crash at the intersection of Augusta Drive and HWY 158 in Currituck County. Soon after the crash, police say an eyewitness stopped to verify on people concerned.

As he approached the automobiles, a woman involved in the accident jumped into the driver’s seat of his Suburban and still left the scene with his five small children within.

The woman, Markell Hancox of Chesapeake, drove northbound down Caratoke Highway prior to pulling into a Hop Inn in which she fled on foot. Officers ended up capable to arrest her shortly soon after.

All five children were discovered risk-free and uninjured in the Suburban.

Hancox has been billed with 5 counts of second-degree kidnapping, leaving the scene of an incident and larceny of a motor vehicle. She is currently becoming held at the Currituck County Detention Center under a $210,000 bond.
